Most computers today include some form of audio playback
capability. First of all, your computer system should include a pair of speakers, whether they're external
speakers or built-in speakers, as in the case of notebooks and the latest PDAs. A soundcard should also be included,
along with cables for interconnection. So basically you would need the following:
1. Soundcard
2. Speakers
3. Cables
This type of basic hardware setup should be adequate for most users. But
obviously if you invest more, you will be able to get better audio reproduction of your music tracks. Let's discuss a
little bit more about soundcards & speakers.
The soundcard is a device that communicates with your computer
to reproduce audio. The soundcard also takes digital signals from inside your computer and converts the signals into an
analog format. These analog signals are then transferred to your speakers, or any external audio devices such as tape
decks, digital recorders or mixers. Most soundcards will include the following connections:
1.
Speaker Output
As the name suggests, here's where you connect your
soundcard to your external speakers with a cable.
2.
Line Out
Use this to connect to an external device such as a CD
recorder, effects processor or cassette deck. For example, you might want to store your music track on
a different recording media.
3.
Line In
This connector can be used to transfer any analog
signals, such as from your DVD player or turntable, into your computer.
4.
Mic. In
Use this connector to input signal from a Microphone.
The speakers included with most computer systems are adequate
for basic reproduction of music. However, most of them are not able to deliver all the frequencies as compared to that
of better, powered speakers. Better quality speakers are able to deliver the full spectrum of frequencies with
accuracy and with better signal-to-noise ratio, allowing you to playback your music tracks at much higher volumes without
distortion. Manufacturers such as JBL, Genelec, KRK, Meyer and Tannoy consistently produce speakers that are of high
quality, reliable and of superior sonic quality.
