Alternate Mixes are normally used as a musical bed, or when a more `open' and less-busy mix is required - such as when there is voice-over, dialogue or a lot of sound effects used in the mix.

Alternate Mixes provide you with alternative options to the original track. It is not only confined to be used in productions that have voice or effects over it. You may like a Rock track but may have found it to be a little too heavy. Use the Sub-mix version of the track for a lighter, less intense feel. It really depends on the mood you wish to set. Sub-mixes give you more options.
